How do you gauge this, then, with a tranquil mind? Even recognising the signs isn't sure to give them a proper sense.

It is easier when the signs point to a truth that one has suspected for a while.

That's to be expected, I'd say, considering all our origins. But certain signs still mean certain things to each of us.

There are meanings that are known to all, and thus would be known to us no matter how little of our own lives we recall; and there are meanings that are particular to our circumstances. Having the former in mind, we think our understanding is complete, but in fact that is an illusion.
