I reckon the goodness of your heart and the rightness of their cause comes into play at that point. I don't know this custom, but it seems familiar to some, and they take it lightly enough.
If this is the custom, what can any of us do? But no, it's unanticipated - I cannot tell what I have to offer that is of such monetary worth - but not unpleasant.
